JIIC…committed to authentic Jamaican culture


JIIC has once again underlined its commitment to preserving the social fabric of Jamaica, by assuming the enviable position of being the title sponsor of the 2010 Poetry in Motion GOLDEN TONGUE AWARDS.
JIIC has been a leading sponsor of Poetry in Motion, a seven (7) year-old event that has showcased some of the best talent in Creative Art locally.
Now, the Golden Tongue Awards (GTA), a prelude to Poetry in Motion (PIM), appeals to younger and new poets.
Elizabeth Chung, marketing manager at JIIC, says, “JIIC supports the arts in recognition that this too is a critical part of accomplishing the social re-engineering that is required in our society. We particularly like that the key requirement of the GTA is that poets depict and reflect aspects of Jamaican Life in a positive and realistic way.”

Further speaking to the relevance of this culture in Jamaica, she said, “Our association with Poetry in Motion over the years has been a fulfilling one. Anything that brings the community together in peace and harmony is worthy of our support. We are excited about the GTA and the literary genus that will be brought to the fore.”

The Golden Tongue Award will be given to the winner & runners-up, who will be the entrants who submits the best poem depicting and reflecting some aspect of Jamaican life in a positive and realistic way.
The poems entered will be judged by a panel of erudite adjudicators.
In giving his view on the competition, Yasus Afari, internationally renowned poet and the brainchild of the award, says, “The Golden Tongue Award has been created to stimulate responsible interest in the performing arts generally and poetry specifically. It is hoped that this will inspire and promote social awareness among Jamaicans and instill a sustainable interest in social responsibility, creative writing, literature and the Jamaican culture and heritage.”

The competition is open to all ages and individual citizens living in the island of Jamaica, however, the works will be judged within the context of age.

Submit a poem along with the entry form which is available upon request through the Ministry of Education regional offices or via email - goldentongueaward@gmail.com, and at JIIC offices islandwide.
